Clock Cleaning and Oiling Service

Preventive maintenance that keeps a healthy movement healthy — inspection, cleaning, correct lubrication and rate adjustment.

Clock Cleaning & Oiling done properly

Clock oil does not evaporate so much as it migrates and thickens. After five or six years it stops carrying load and starts holding grit, which is the point at which pivots begin to wear. Regular cleaning and oiling is cheap; the overhaul that follows years of neglect is not.

What this service covers

  • Visual and magnified inspection of the movement in place
  • Removal of dust, cobwebs and surface residue
  • Correct oil in the correct quantity at every oil sink
  • Chime and strike synchronisation check
  • Rate set and pendulum beat verified

Questions about clock cleaning & oiling

Can I oil my own clock?

We advise against it. Household oils gum quickly, and over-oiling draws dust straight into the pivot. One over-oiled clock costs more to fix than a decade of professional service.

How much oil does a clock need?

A precise drop at each oil sink and nowhere else. Oil on the wheel teeth is a common and damaging mistake.

Is cleaning enough if my clock has stopped?

Sometimes, but a clock that has stopped often has a worn pivot behind it. We inspect first and tell you honestly.
